Our Unique Approach
One-Size-Fits-All Treatment Plans Don’t Work
You’re unique, your body’s unique, and therefore the solution to your chronic illness is unique. That’s why we provide you with a plan that is as unique to you as your fingerprint.
Your chronic illness symptoms aren’t random – they’re part of a pattern. And these patterns are often predictable. Our goal is to discover your patterns and address the underlying causes. Why? Because when you know the causes and patterns of your chronic illness, you can begin to work towards feeling whole again. You can begin to heal.
Because you’re so unique, our approach has to be unique!
When we first started FLI, we were one of the first in the United States offering this specific approach to creating long-term health and wellness. Now there are a handful only of others doing similar work.
Our unique FLI approach consists of several puzzle pieces:
Unfortunately, the focus of today’s healthcare industry is on treating individual symptoms or problems. They tend to see you as a disease or a condition or a cluster of symptoms and not as the complete, complex human being you are. Luckily, functional medicine is different.
It’s an approach to your health and well-being that addresses you as a whole person with complex needs that can’t be diagnosed with a simple test or fixed with a simple pill. The all of you gets treated – mind and body, head to toe, inside and out.
So what does functional medicine look like? First of all, you have the right to expect a thorough assessment by your doctor with plenty of focused time and attention on your specific needs. Your health, lifestyle, history, and more tell the story of who you are, how you feel, and how you interact with the world. These same factors contribute to predicting and influencing your long-term health and your potential to overcome chronic disease.
Functional medicine encompasses many specialties and approaches in order to provide you with an enlightened healthcare team and individually tailored solutions for your specific needs. This is how healthcare should be practiced and how it will be practiced in the future. Functional medicine is future forward medicine, today.
Your brain is one of the most complex and specialized parts of your body. It is also one of the least understood. Functional neurology takes the approach that your brain is much more than simply an organ that responds to medication or surgery to help it work better.
Your brain and the nervous system are much more adaptable than traditional neurology realizes. By learning what aspects of your environment, your lifestyle, and your diet impact your particular system, you can actually change and improve your brain function. With guided exercises and very specific advice, functional neurology can get in under your skull and into your brain to help improve your overall health and well-being. Think improved focus, reduced stress, less brain fog, and helping your nervous system interact more efficiently with the rest of your body.
Your body is a complex, beautiful organism made up of multiple systems that work together to keep you going. However, when one system – usually the nervous system, the endocrine (hormone) system or the immune system – becomes impaired, it can’t work properly. And that one system can throw everything else off.
The result? You begin to feel tired and ill. You may have vague complaints that others don’t really take seriously. Or maybe you have a specific nagging issue that just won’t go away no matter what. Chances are good that one or more of these three systems is working improperly. Neuroendocrine immunology is how we help bring your nervous, endocrine, and immune systems back into alignment – resolving your symptoms and improving your health.
Like most of us, you were probably taught that, if you eat right, you’ll enjoy good health and be full of energy. Unfortunately it’s not quite that simple or entirely true. Nutrigenomics is a fancy word for understanding how the foods you eat influence your individual genetic variations. If you suffer from chronic conditions such as fatigue or insomnia for example, your diet is probably interacting with your individual genetic makeup in a less than ideal manner.
After basic genetic testing and discussing your food and nutrition choices, you learn which foods help your body thrive and which ones contribute to poor health and therefore keep you in the cycle of chronic illness. Streamlining your diet and making smart, targeted food choices (perhaps with vitamin and mineral supplementation), may help you undo years of damage and improve your long-term health and well-being.
Wellness Foundational Basics
You know the basics of a healthy diet, but what happens when you eat right but still feel ill? Or what if you count you calories but still can’t control your weight? The truth is conventional wisdom about healthy eating often misses the mark and overlooks the fact that you are a unique individual with unique nutritional needs. If your symptoms appear to be related to your diet, a carefully controlled, guided elimination diet may be used to identify food sensitivities and intolerances, while allowing your stomach and intestinal tract time to recover and heal.
Most of us carry around any number of toxic, unhealthy substances in our bodies, but if you are suffering from chronic illness, you may have more than your share. Detoxifying, i.e. removing these harmful substances, is crucial to improving your health. For some, this may involve nutritional coaching, the use of targeted supplements, or advance treatments such as infrared sauna therapy. While many people have tried to detox at home, they may have met with limited success. That’s why we prefer to guide you every step of the way so that you can rid your body of harmful substances in a safe, efficient way that’s going to bring you good results.
Just the way a “healthy” diet may not get you the results you desire, your exercise routine may be failing you as well. You may even feel worse instead of better! When you think of exercise, you probably think of cardio and strength training. Few of us are taught to consider our nervous system and brain, even though these are important parts of any diet and exercise routine. This is where functional neurology enters the picture to help you achieve better health through an individualized exercise routine – a routine that is adjusted to meet your ability level and to achieve flexibility, balance, speed, and leanness for true longevity and graceful aging.
A critical part of improving your health and wellness is managing your lifestyle factors. Based on your individual needs, we hope to help you manage stress, find joy in life, practice self-reflection and self-care, and much, much more. A lifestyle factor that frequently gets forgotten but is so important to your overall well-being is the impact environmental exposures are having upon you.
